The 2019 Novel Coronavirus got the official name, COVID-19, from the World Health Organization(WHO) on February 10. EnvGuide collected and summarized the information about the COVID-19 and will post COVID-19 topical news in a timely fashion to report on the outbreak.
What is the COVID-19?
In late December 2019, the city of Wuhan in Hubei Province, a large city in China comprised of over 11 million residents, broke out with several cases of pneumonia which later became characterized as the COVID-19. According to the CDC, Center of Disease Control and Prevention, coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and spread between people such as MERS, SARS, and now COVID-19. According to clinical statistics, all populations are believed to be at risk, although the elderly and those with underlying diseases are especially vulnerable.

What are the routes of transmission for the COVID-19?
Droplets and contact transmission are the main routes of transmission. At the Shanghai Epidemic Prevention and Control Leading Group Press Conference held on February 8, health and epidemic prevention experts confirmed aerosol transmission. Aerosol transmission refers to the mixing of droplets in the air to form aerosols which can cause infection after inhalation. Transmission routes through ingested means still need to be clarified. Patients with the COVID-19, and individuals with asymptomatic infection could be a source of infection.
How long is the incubation period of the COVID-19 and what are the symptoms?
The incubation period is generally 3 to 7 days but can be up to 14 days. Individuals under this incubation period have the potential to transmit the COVID-19. However, the transmission of asymptomatic cases is very rare. According to the CDC, patients with the COVID-19 have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. People’s Daily, the authorized magazine in China, reported that according to clinical statistics, a small number of patients have symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat and diarrhea. Mild patients show only low fever, mild fatigue, and no pneumonia.
