Texas Requests $61 Billion to Rebuild Post-Harvey
Texas Senator Greg Abbott requested $61 billion in federal funds to rebuild and improve the Texas coastline in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The plan he proposed aims to rebuild areas devastated by the storm and create coast-wide infrastructure protection to better prepare Texas for future disasters.
With the proposed funding, the state seeks to cover flood and hazard mitigation of public infrastructure as well as construct the Galveston Coastal Spine Project, a coastal barrier protection system. The funding request is based off of a combination of surveys from local mayors and county judges, plus U.S. Army Corps of Engineer projects that could reduce the potential for future storm damage.
